How to enable the recommendations
The Upsell Recommendation Application can recommend products in the following three pages:
- Home page
- Product Page
- Cart Page
When you go the admin dashboard, you can see them represented the following way:
As you see, you can control each page’s settings separately.
You can turn the recommendation off
or on
as you wish, by using the toggle on the bottom right corner.
What recommendation types are available and how
to select them
By clicking on the “Edit” button on the bottom left corner,
ou will go to the recommendation setting page relevant to the page you selected.
Here you can select between two recommendation types:
- Intelligent Product Recommendations
- Best-selling Products.
By now, you know how to enable and select a recommendation type for the supported pages.
Next, let’s take a look, how these recommendations are selecting products for your customers.
How the recommendation types are selecting products for your customers
Intelligent Product Recommendation
When you select the Intelligent Product Recommendation, it will behave similarly on each page regardless if it is your home page, product page, or your cart page. The intelligent recommender will try to select a combination of your best selling and most expensive products across your entire product base.
Best-selling Products (Category based)
The best-selling products recommender logic is customized for each type of page. From the exception of home page we categorize products based on “Product type”.

Note: Shopify uses “Collections” as an alternative method for product categorization, that is not supported by the Upsell Recommendation.
A, Home Page
Using the best-selling product recommendation, we will select a list from your best-selling products across all of your available products. Category restrictions are not applied here.
B, Product Page
On the product page we will recommend the best-selling products that is in same category with the product displayed on your product page.
C, Cart Page
On the cart page we will recommend the best-selling products that is in same category with the products placed in your cart.
Note: There is a rare case, when a shop owner selects the Best Seller (Category based) recommendation logic, and the recommender cannot find any product to recommend on the Product and Cart pages. That can happen when you do not have any product in the category of the viewed/selected products that the customer visits.
If you find yourself in that situation, you can try the following options to troubleshoot:
- Try to categorize your products using the Product Type as described above, so you have more product in one product type to recommend.
- Select the intelligent recommendation logic. This logic looks at you entire available product base, just be sure, to have enough available product to choose from.
